STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2007  
ASHLEY GARCIA BARAJAS is a Third grade Dual language student at Jackson Elementary. Ashley Garcia Barajas is an intelligent and focused student. She strives to always learn more and go the extra mile with her work. Ashley values and feels great pride for her Mexican culture and understands that being bilingual is a true gift. Ashley not only models excellent academic stamina but also has modeled behavior that encourages mutual respect among her peers.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2007  
JULIA MARTINEZ, ESL teacher at Mountain View Elementary in Salt Lake City School District Julia Martinez has dedicated many years working with second language learners. She is a great support to the staff at Mountain View and is always working towards creating a more dynamic and inclusive education for second language learners. Julia has never allowed excuses for children to not be given a state of the art education. She has been instrumental in the creation of innovative educational approaches at Mountain View Elementary.

 
ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR 2007  
SANDRA BUENDIA, Principal at Jackson Elementary School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sandra Buendia is currently working to support second language learners at Jackson through Dual Language and inclusive pedagogy in the English classrooms. Sandra has dedicated extensive time and effort to supporting second language learners. She has been instrumental in the creation and maintenance of dual language and developmental bilingual schools in Salt Lake District as the ALS coordinator before beginning her work at Jackson.

 
COMMUNITY MEMBERS OF THE YEAR 2007  
THE SCHOOL BOARD OF THE DUAL IMMERSION ACADEMY, a Utah State Charter School. The members of the School board are Barbara Fink, Julie Olsen, Rebecca Clark, Mike Sutton, Patricia Dark, and Kathleen Tadeo. They took a dream that was created by a group of Mothers to its’ fullest potential. They worked tirelessly for three years at the development of a charter school that just opened in the Fall of 2007. The Dual Immersion Academy is not just another school. It is a place where bilingualism is the norm and children understand the value of bilingualism.  



STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2006  
Elies Chan a second grader from Jackson Elementary in Salt Lake City was elected as UABE student of the year. Elies is a very hard working student that is committed to learning in Spanish and English. She is also fluent in Chinese and interested in becoming a doctor when she grows up. Congratulations Elies. Best of luck to you!

TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2006  
Nayibe Garcia has worked as a bilingual teacher in Salt Lake City School District for six years. She is dedicated to motivating parents and families to push their children academically and culturally. She is a highly energized and enthusiastic educator. She currently teaches at Mountain View Elementary teaching K in Spanish.

PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR 2006  
Dale Wilkinson is the assistant principal at Ogden High School where he has worked tirelessly to help the ALS students achieve academically. Dale has worked hard to develop options for non-English speaking students, including a P.M. school/credit recovery program, a summer bridge program for incoming students to Ogden High, and community outreach programs. He is an advocate for bilingualism and strongly supports the Ogden community and it's diversity.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION OR ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR 2006  
ADELANTE is a community organization that has worked tirelessly in creating a partnership between the University of Utah and Jackson Elementary in Salt Lake City to expose students enrolled in the Dual Language strand to the University community. They have developed cross-curriculum field trips to the University for the K and 1st grade students at Jackson. They have also created a partnership with University students and Jackson teachers to develop volunteer opportunities at Jackson. Congratulations to Adelante for creating access to the University community and what it has to offer.
